What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is…
According to Webster’s Dictionary, it is “a trance-like state that resembles sleep but is induced by a person whose suggestions are readily accepted by the subject.” This and the myriad of other definitions don’t do much to dispel the mystery that surrounds this ancient art, so here’s another way to look at it:
Your mind basically works on two levels: the conscious and subconscious. Your conscious mind brought you to this website, but your subconscious mind was likely in control the last time you drove your car. It kept you from running red lights, rear-ending the car in front of you, and even successfully navigated back to your home while you were busy figuring out what to fix for dinner or planning your activities for the next day. In other words, it is your trusty autopilot. It is also largely responsible for controlling your habits.
By means of an induction, a hypnotist quiets the conscious mind while speaking to the subconscious mind. With the use of powerful suggestions, the subconscious is “reprogrammed” to change bad habits or encourage good ones. Not only is it safe (you can’t be hypnotized to do something you don’t want to do) but it’s powerful! Just think - if you didn’t have a lot of faith in your subconscious mind, would you continue to let it drive your car every day?
