What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is…

According to Webster’s Dictionary, it is “a trance-like state that resembles sleep but is induced by a person whose suggestions are readily accepted by the subject.” This and the myriad of other definitions don’t do much to dispel the mystery that surrounds this ancient art, so here’s another way to look at it:

Your mind basically works on two levels: the conscious and subconscious. Your conscious mind brought you to this website, but your subconscious mind was likely in control the last time you drove your car.  It kept you from running red lights, rear-ending the car in front of you, and even successfully navigated back to your home while you were busy figuring out what to fix for dinner or planning your activities for the next day. In other words, it is your trusty autopilot. It is also largely responsible for controlling your habits.

So, what is hypnosis that one uses in a clinical setting.  In other words, what does hypnosis mean to you if you come into a hypnotists office.  By means of an induction, a hypnotist quiets the conscious mind while speaking to the subconscious mind. With the use of powerful suggestions, the subconscious is “reprogrammed” to change bad habits or encourage good ones. Not only is it safe (you can’t be hypnotized to do something you don’t want to do) but it’s powerful! Just think - if you didn’t have a lot of faith in your subconscious mind, would you continue to let it drive your car every day?

So, again, What is Hypnosis?

Simply put, hypnosis is a very relaxed state where your mind is focused and it is very receptive to suggestions that allow you to change bad habits.  Bad habits like:

·         Smoking cigarettes

·         Chewing and biting your nails

·         Overeating

·         Pulling on your hair

·         Picking on your skin

·         Making poor choices (again and again)

·         Losing your temper (again and again)

·         Dating losers (perhaps again and again?)

·         Compulsive spending

·         Eating fattening foods

·         Abusing drugs

·         Sitting on your butt, being lazy

·         Drinking too much alcohol

·         Disorganized

·         Having panic like attacks

·         Crying and overreacting

·         Being late

·         ……The list goes on and on and on
